What you eat may affect how you learn, say UCLA researchers in a new study on the effects of high fructose corn syrup and omega-3 fatty acids on the behavior of rats.
Rats that were fed only high fructose corn syrup and standard rat chow had more trouble navigating a maze at the end of six weeks than rats who were fed a diet supplemented with omega-3 fatty acids, according to results published in the Journal of Physiology.
Is there any way to convince the US government to switch from subsidizing corn to another vegetables, grains, or actual sugar cane? I know its probably a more complicated situation than that, but there’s gotta be a (cost-effective) way to keep high fructose corn syrup from being in so much food.
You know, sometimes I think America wants to keep their people… docile?

Now is as good time as any to defeat dogs. I’ve kept losing every single fight with dogs. They are a team and I’m alone, but finally the day came to me. Be ready for it, hot dogs. I’ll bring you into the ketchup hell.
Is that you, Maru?

I made this chart after reading an article that informed me that sitting more than six hours a day was effectively killing me. I immediately flipped out and started eating lunch standing up (which I still do pretty frequently). However, that only brings my daily sit time down to about 23 hours.
Anyway, learning this fact made me wonder what other things were lowering my lifespan.
Explanations and sources for each fact can be found here: http://bit.ly/IAPhpl
…and yes, you read that right…NOT drinking alcohol (in moderation) supposedly reduces lifespan.
so according to this i should have one week or two
the only one of these I don’t do is smoke cigarettes
welp, good-bye, cruel world
how does not drinking alcohol kill five and a half years though what fucking sense does that makeHey Darky I didn’t know you were a policeman.
you know what shut upDrinking alcohol in moderation avoids heart disease.
In moderation.
so yeah it makes sense
What is this silly thing? If you add it all up you’d be dead as an infant!
NINE years for negative thoughts? NINE YEARS? Is this some passive aggressive thing? *facepalm*

Oh my god I’ve seen one of these before but it bears repeating
Every single one of these is completely inaccurate and doesn’t account for time and labor and it’s just wrong.
I bought a bag of dried cranberries yesterday shit was almost $3
LIKE MY GOD, I WISH HEALTHY FOOD WAS THIS AFFORDABLE BECAUSE I DO COOK AT HOME ALMOST EVERY NIGHT AND I SPEND WAY MORE THAN THIS ON GROCERIES
In a world where it costs more money to eat healthier.
lol $3
that same bag of cranberries in the wal-mart at my bus stop would be like five and change
I can get relatively similar prices at the Aldi’s near me….but my alternative argument is I bike 4 miles to work and I don’t have the time beforehand to make a meal to take with me, and in the event I do it tends to get…jumbled on the 4 mile bike ride. I can sacrifice 2-5 dollars a day to the Taco Bell gods for the convenience.
The vegetables aren’t far off the mark (depending on where you are), and for generic brand stuff a lot of the packaged stuff isn’t bad, but the meat is wayyyy off. A pound of chicken breasts for 98¢? Boneless skinless breasts ( which those appear to be) are upwards of $7 a pound. 96% lean ground beef is $4.69 a pound. That said, eating healthy, being smart about it, and minding portion sizes really can be a lot cheaper than eating junk food. The junk option will almost always give you MORE food for the same price, but you can get a satisfying amount of healthy food.
I wish I had my last shopping list on hand, because I’ve recently gone back to eating the same high-protein high-fiber rigorous-portion-sizes caveman style no-processed-food diet I was last year. I spent $70 At Trader Joes last Sunday (including some non-essential spices) and that will likely last me well into next week. Kale, spinach, broccoli, lettuce, and celery all run about $2/bag. The bags of leafy greens seem to run just under two 150g servings most of the time, while the broccoli bags have about three or four 100g servings and the celerey is just… days and days worth of 200g servings. The $12 bag of boneless skinless free range organic chicken breasts in my freezer right now has about eight servings worth of meat. A pack of lean ground turkey breast gave me enough meat for nearly nine days worth of 75g breakfast patties, adding up to less than $1/patty. Every morning I have one of those or a couple eggs with an apple and tea or water, making my breakfast cost less than a buck or two daily. Today I didn’t have time to make lunch before I went to work so I went to Trader Joes and got a package of plain, pre-cooked boneless skinless chicken breast containing four servings for $5 and a three-serving bag of broccoli for a buck fifty or so. That’s more than three lunches worth of food for under $7.
It’s a much larger startup-cost, I think when I started eating this way I dropped $300+ on groceries, largely thanks to all the seasonings I would need to do everything from scratch. But after that the grocery bills have been quite reasonable, and less than I was spending on fast food. It’s not exactly a “fun” way to eat, I miss pizza and burgers but I’m doing it for health reasons, diabetes seems to run in my family and I kind of teeter on the “increased risk” waistline when I don’t go out of my way to make healthy choices. Last year I went from nearly 200 lbs down to 160 and cut my waistline down about five inches by cutting out processed food and walking a couple miles a day. It’s certainly easier to get a box of nachos at 7-11 or something like that, but with a little effort I can make a pretty awesome steak-and butter lettuce salad for about the same price per plate.
Wait, I thought the problem of obesity in America was because the unhealthy food is cheaper than the healthy food?
